About us


Tiina And, is the person responsible for organizing courses and receiving foreign students. She was born in Finland, and graduated from the Scuola Superiore per Interpreti e Traduttori Gregorio VII (The School for Interpreters and Translators) in Rome. As a professional free lance translator and interpreter (Italian-English and viceversa, as well as Italian-Finnish and viceversa, with competence in technical, commercial, and legal language, as well as working with foreign tourists) she has always worked in multicultural situations: organizing international meetings, helping to orient volunteers for the European Union EVS project, interpreter for the Rieti Dance Festival, etc. Tiina And has also worked organizing and liaising with foreign clients in the international housing market. At the Ateneo she is also involved in the development of co-operation and relationships with cultural associations and such like bodies abroad.


Francesca Brandi, our director of studies, studied at Sapienza University of Rome, at the University of L’Aquila, and at the University of Milan. Initially she studied foreign languages and literature, specialising in comparative world literature, and later moved on to L2 didactic methodology. She has held posts as a trainer for foreign business managers in a number of multi-national companies with offices in Italy (Danone and Ferrarelle, Solvey Solexis, Siemens, Neinver Italia, Instrumentation Laboratory, Peugeot, Altana Pharma, etc.) in the Spike and British School in Milan, and has worked for Accademia di Italiano in Milan teaching business-, general- and Italian for special purposes. Francesca Brandi’s didactic work has included teaching of Italian as a foreign language to students of all nationalities in multilingual classes including new arrivals. She has also worked as a private tutor in Italian. Her main activities at the Ateneo are in the areas of supervision of intercultural education, reception of new foreign students, and the teaching Italian as a foreign language.


Our staff: teachers


Geraint Douglas Evans was born in Wales, U.K., and has a degree in History, English literature  and Law from the University of London. He has specialised in teaching English as a foreign language, and did his initial training at International House, Piccadilly, London, in 1986, with a further training in TEFL from Eye to Eye, an ODLQC (Open and Distance Learning Quality Council) certified course. He has been a teacher in the five levels of Cambridge University ESOL certification (KET, PET, FCE Advanced certificate, and Proficiency) for the British Institute of Rome, teacher of Business English (Accenture, Alitalia, Deutche Bank, Deutche Telecom/T-Systems, Lottomatica, McDonalds, BNP Paribas, TNT, Wyeth Pharmaceuticals, etc.), English teacher at various Ministries (Ministero degli Interni, Ministero dell’Università e della Ricerca Scientifica) and has taught English at the University of Kayseri in Turkey and as a private tutor in Asia. At the Ateneo di Italiano Geraint Evans is the teacher responsible for all our English courses.

Vanessa Formichetti, graduated in literature and philosophy from the Italian and Performing Arts Department of Sapienza University of Rome, with a specialization in cinema history and criticism. She has a theatrical training from the Associazione Culturale Minuetto, Rome, and a training as a teacher of Italian as a foreign language from Dilit International House. Through this training Vanessa Formichetti has been able to deepen her knowledge through learning the most up to date teaching methodology, and in particular the use of theatre in language teaching. She is a theatre actress and organizer of the RIFF (Rome Independent Film Festival), and artistic vice-director of the Asian Film Festival of Rome. At ADI she is a teacher of Italian as a foreign language, and responsible for teaching projects based on theatre.
